Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
2024

Horror comedy

More than just a nostalgia film, it's a nice continuation of Beetlejuice's existence. Yes, Lydia and Delia are in this one as well, played by the same actresses; Winona Ryder and the magnificent Catherine O'Hara (Kevin's mom). Speaking of actresses, Monica Bellucci plays a fantastic villainess that really ties the film together. In fact, she's the whole reason for it. Anyone familiar with the original knows that Beetlejuice was lively, energetic, and ready for screwing with people's minds, the type of person you really want at a party to keep things interesting and force the boring ones to leave. Unfortunately, he's kind of a shell of what he used to be in this one. Regardless, it is overall still good and worth a watch.

The Nun
2018

Supernatural horror

Imagine if demons in possession movies actually carefully planned things out in a misleading manner for an actually hostile plan, as it would probably be in real life with what we attribute to them. For lovers of the evil aesthetic, the scenes in this film are pretty great, and it is the greatest film in the Conjuring universe. It's been criticized for plot holes, but we all know what stories like this are really about - the appeal for terror. With its dark visuals and vibes, it delivers on exactly that. Darth Sidious did really well for himself in a convent.

As Above, So Below
2014

Supernatural horror

This film certainly contributes to the atmosphere of the season. It's a unique take on Hermetic Alchemy where a group of independent film makers explore the Catacombs of Paris and walk right into Hell without a second thought. They are looking for the philosopher's stone, and find it, but not before they start dying horribly. It leaves you with a weird feeling by the end.

Drag Me to Hell
2009

Supernatural horror

Is it supposed to be funny? It only seemed that way about half way through because of how cheesy it became. Still though, the demonic effects of this movie were pretty great, which is more than you can say for most, and is the highlight of the movie. It's about a woman who is cursed to Hell in three days, and she tries everything she can to break the curse, but then the title is the spoiler. It's worth a watch if you haven't seen it. Fair warning though, it is not for everyone. It has been described as, "Drag Me to Hell? More like Drag Me out of the Theatre."

Mirrors
2008

Supernatural horror

If you have a real phobia of mirrors or have ever had nightmares about them, this film certainly plays on that. This movie doesn't waste any time in revealing the plot, showcasing what it's about in the first five minutes. That is part of the charm of the entire movie though, because you get a heightened sense of what can happen where. And let's be honest, you probably could have guessed without the early spoiler, but they knew that. It is worth a watch if you don't mind a strong sense of... lurking.

Zombie spoof

If your sense of humor is just mean then you'll love this one. You will have to drop your political correctness guard to get a laugh out of it. It makes fun of the cliché of older burial ground movies as well as has 90's style humor written all over it, even though it was produced about ten years too late. Seeing it will gross you out, it will offend you, and it will rock your world.

Shaun of the Dead
2004

Zombie comedy

Contrary to the fact that they're killing Zombies, it is more of a light hearted comedy. It's not exactly a spoof, but there are a lot of fun hidden references to other zombie movies. This is probably the only one on this list you can play at a party that won't freak out the squeamish ones. One of the best parts of the movie is also the most real moment, the genuine reaction to seeing a real-life zombie as saying "Oh, my god. She's so drunk."

House of 1000 Corpses
2003

Kidnapping

The first half of the movie is great and pretty funny, a perfect Halloween movie. Then the second half of the movie takes a serious turn and is just plain fucking weird, a perfect horror movie. For those of you who don't know, this movie was written and directed by Rob Zombie, along with two sequels, The Devils Rejects, and 3 From Hell (Firefly trilogy). Hands down, the best character is Captain Spaulding.

Spawn
1997

Dark fantasy

It's disappointing that this film isn't talked about more, considering it has to be one of the greatest inspirations of the Halloween spirit of its time. It's kind of like The Crow in that the protagonist is a vengeful spirit with a righteous vendetta, only Hell is involved and trying to get Spawn to work for them. Whatever you do, don't underestimate the clown, because there's a reason his attitude is so in your face.

The Craft
1996

Fantasy thriller

The Craft features a small "coven" of teenage girls who are neutral witches. All of which start going bad to solve their problems, and one goes from bad to worse when she becomes drunk with power, leading the other two against the newest girl. The new girl eventually outdoes them, assuredly not by innocent means, in contrast to her appearance. It has been said that there were a lot of angry teenagers in the 1990s and this film showcases that along with what they all wished they could do about it. So, good thing it isn't real, because, damn. Ending kind of sucked, but it overall it was one of the greats of its decade.

Lord of Illusions
1995

Supernatural horror

Quite possibly the best Clive Barker film that you didn't know was part of the Hellraiser universe. You read that right; indirectly through the comics. The sad truth about the Hellraiser films is that this one is far more eventful than any of them. It's about the death of the leader of a death cult, and a devoted young Barry Del Sherman trying to resurrect him. Scott Bakula is sent to investigate something totally unrelated, but is quickly thrown into the mix when Sherman starts kicking his ass throughout the film. He gets his ass kicked a lot, and you should check it out. Also, a lot of blood and cool shit.

The Nightmare Before Christmas
1993

Musical fantasy

Of course you've seen it before. You better have. Watch it again. This is one of those fun, busy movies where you catch something new every time you watch it. It's really the best one for November, when you have the Halloween decorations still up for another month and start decorating for Christmas anyways. No spoilers, you will love it no matter who you are. Adorable is the word, and it'll inspire you to kidnap the Sandy Claws. On a side note, watching as an adult leads you to the realization that this story has an underlying message about what can happen with cultural appropriation, especially when the culture isn't understood.

Hocus Pocus
1993

Horror comedy

Imagine if the three stooges were witches trying to live forever. Weirdly evil, they try to steal the souls of children to stay young, but at the same time they are also the extroverted life of the party. This is a perfect Halloween movie for kids and adults, timeless, festive, and perfectly executed. The Sanderson sisters wake up 300 years after their execution and find themselves confused by the festivities of Halloween, pointing out the absurdity of them in a funny way that's relatable. The casting for this film was spot on, bringing the characters to life in a way that's hard to imagine anyone else doing.

Braindead
1992

Zombie spoof

Also known as Dead Alive, this has to be one of the most awkward movies to ever exist. It's about a grown man taking care of his sick mom, even after she comes down with an obviously serious infection from a rat-monkey bite. A bunch of weird effects for blood and pus follow. Then you get to see a nearly decapitated zombie minister having sex with a zombie nurse at a dinner table. Then a whole lotta over the top gore. Probably the best scene though is when he's fighting off a hoard of zombies with a lawnmower. Nothing has been spoiled. It gets worse.

Ernest Scared Stupid
1991

Horror comedy

If you remember watching this one as a kid, you probably remember it fondly. If you watch it as an adult you will realize it's pretty goofy and terrible. It'll always be a very fun movie for young kids and set the Halloween tone. Dumb is what this film seemed to aim for, which is why it's so bad in a somewhat good way. If your child is single digits in age, play it for them and let them decide.

The People Under the Stairs
1991

Kidnapping

A kid from the ghetto is convinced to help break into his landlord's house, but then the guy he helps gets killed by the landlord, leaving the kid stuck in the house with two psycho maniacs. Then he finds out other kids are living in the walls. True story. But the best element is how much the landlord seems to enjoy wanting to kill him.

Nightbreed

If you love weird shit, then this is your movie. It's about evolved humans living underground, some of them deformed, and some of them with extraordinary abilities. Cradle of Filth fans will recognize the name Midian; that is the setting here. Clive Barker really has a knack for showcasing pain in his stories, but this is something wildly different, and you're not cool with it, then it will leave you confused about reality.

Beetlejuice
1988

Horror comedy

A lot of energy in this one! Imagine if reality were the backrooms except if they were really warped with a sense of style from someone on shrooms. That is the portrayal of the afterlife, a place you really don't want to go whether you've been good or bad. And then imagine coming across someone who is perpetually drunk and hyper, all too happy with what he has. It seems like every day is Halloween there. Props to Lydia for her shameless OG showcasing of what it meant to be goth. It's hard to tell if this was meant to be a kid's movie, but it was pretty outstanding for its time. Recommended for any audience as a go-to film.

Kind of like Pet Sematary, only better. Older horror films like this have an element of pain to them that really bring the sense of evil to life. A guy loses his child because of an irresponsible group of teenagers, and goes to a stereotypical witch, like something out of an old fairytale. The witch conjures a demon to avenge the child's death, sending it on a killing spree, and it gets just plain weird. The demon is like something out of a literal nightmare. The guy's soul is attached to the demon, so he can see every time it kills, and then he starts having regrets. You can probably predict the rest, but it's still pretty cool.

Creepshow
1982

Creature feature anthology

For a movie made over four decades ago, this film is still freaking fantastic. One of the best elements is that Leslie Nielson is in it playing a serious role. It tells a number of short stories that take place out of a comic book in the film, incorporating effects at the scary moments of high contrast red and blue lighting. Each story ends with a type of poetic justice as well as comes to a head in a dark humorous joke, even though the stories themselves are not meant to be funny.
